In a Policy Options commentary, College of Social and Applied Human Sciences faculty members Drs. Troy Riddell and Dennis Baker discussed the need for more police training on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Riddell and Baker said the number of police breaches of the Charter indicate the need for increased training, data collection, feedback and discipline within the profession.
Riddell chairs the Department of Political Science, and researches criminal justice policy, sentencing and the implementation of Charter of Rights decisions.
Also a professor in the Department of Political Science, Baker studies separation of powers between the courts and representative branches. He has written on the power of the Supreme Court of Canada and Parliament in settling political and constitutional controversies, and on how police implement judicial decisions.
