Dr. Shane Bateman, a professor at the Ontario Veterinary College, provided tips to national media outlets on how to ensure pets stay cool during heat waves.
He appeared on several CBC Radio stations, including CBC Kitchener-Waterloo, and recommended owners plan ahead to ensure their activities present the least risk to their pets.
“You can plan your adventure such that there are opportunities for them to either go into water if they’re comfortable to go for a wee swim, or certainly making sure that you’re planning for them to have regular rest breaks,” he said.
For an article for Global News, Bateman expanded on tips for keeping pets cool and discussed how heat affects farm and wild animals.
Bateman is a professor in the Department of Clinical Studies and an emergency and critical care specialist in the OVC Health Sciences Centre.
