Statistics Canada is planning to change how it monitors food prices and in doing so is considering making its data from the last 25 years inaccessible. Agribusiness researcher Dr. Simon Somogyi explained why that’s problematic to AM640.

Somogyi said that tracking historical data is necessary “to see how things are changing right now.” He also said the federal agency’s plan to update the food items they track is a good step for the monitoring practices to be more reflective of current Canadian dietary trends.

The Arrell Chair in the Business of Food, and a professor in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management, Somogyi researches agri-food value chain analysis and management and international market development.
