The Narwhal online magazine has published a profile of the work of U of G student Ghanimat Azhdari, who was killed in the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines jet in Iran.
In an article entitled “What We Lost When Ghanimat Azhdari Was Killed in the Iran Plane Crash,” which was republished on The Walrus website, Azhdari’s PhD supervisor, Prof. Faisal Moola, Department of Geography, Environment, and Geomatics, spoke glowingly of his student, noting she was dedicated to her work and “absolutely adored.”
Moola said Azhdari had a “passion for conservation and deep commitment to advance the rights of Indigenous peoples, both in Iran and globally.”
He said upon her return to Canada, Azhdari was planning to head into the field to meet with research partners with Parks Canada and the Miawpukek First Nation in Newfoundland to map their important cultural sites.
Moola added he hopes Azhdari’s fellow students can carry her work forward and complete and perhaps posthumously publish some of her research.
