A U of G Department of Athletics initiative to promote gender equity and excellence in women’s sports was the subject of a Canadian Press article that appeared in The Globe And Mail, the Toronto Star, TSN.ca and elsewhere.
The article highlights She’s Got Game, an annual gala and fundraising campaign that raises money for women and girls in sport and aims to promote athletic gender equity.
The article notes that the initiative has galvanized the local Guelph community and helped fuel the success of the Guelph Gryphons women’s hockey team, which won the U Sports national championship in March. (Three other University of Guelph women’s teams stood on the U Sports podium this season as well.)
The program is expanding so that next season, the Gryphons will begin offering one named scholarship for each of their U Sports women’s teams.
The author notes that She’s Got Game, as well as a similar initiative at McGill University, has now become a model for other universities and sport organizations across Canada.
She’s Got Game aims to raise $2.5 million to support the Guelph Gryphons female athletics program, to attract the best female student athletes and foster gender equity in sport. To date, $990,000 has been raised. More info can be found on the She’s Got Game website.
