U of G’s Nathan Skoufis, 25, is making a big name for himself in the karate world. The fourth-year business student is now a member of Team Canada.

In recent weeks, Skoufis’s progress up the karate competition ladder picked up speed.  This spring, he won his sixth straight title at the Power Nationals Canadian Martial Arts Championships in London, Ont.

He had qualified for Team Ontario at an April meet in Burlington, Ont., enabling him to compete in national championships. By the time nationals ended earlier this week, he was on the Team Canada roster.

Skoufis also recently competed in the Canadian open championships held in Kitchener, Ont., where he won in the adult lightweight category. After defeating the senior and heavyweight champions, he was named overall champion of the event.

Skoufis is the owner and head instructor of Guelph Family Martial Arts. He began his martial arts training at the age of six. His journey in karate is featured in a video on Facebook. As a U of G student, he was featured in a University news story about his hectic training, work and academic schedule.
