Prof. Lynn McDonald appeared in a Nov. 6 CBC News story about solitary confinement in a Saskatchewan prison where one inmate has been held for 44  days and counting.

The inmate, Noel Harder, is a former police witness for a major police investigation.

McDonald, a former MP and a member of the Order of Canada, has called for years for the abolition of solitary confinement. She discussed the federal government’s desire to limit solitary confinement to 15 days and to adopt UN principles known as the “Mandela Rules.”

She discussed physical and mental health risks caused by long periods in segregation.

McDonald is a professor emerita in U of G’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology.
