Prof. Tamara Small was interviewed by The Walrus for a June 1 article about how Facebook amasses your data.
As a professor in U of G’s Department of Political Science, Small studies the use of digital technologies. She said that while Facebook is free, we are actually selling bits of our identity every time we like a page, click on a link or post photos of our families. She said our online activity results in the accumulation of a data cloud that follows us and updates each time we use Facebook. This data is a valuable asset for Facebook and amounts to continued online surveillance, says Small.
She has published work on Twitter, blogging by Canadian parliamentarians and the regulatory framework for the Internet in Canadian elections.
