Best known for artworks that incorporate modern icons and design, New York-based sculptor Tom Sachs will discuss his work at U of G this month during the 2018 Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art.

His lecture, “Bricolage and Ritual in the Sculpture,” will take place March 28, 6 p.m., at War Memorial Hall.

Sachs will explore ideas about material objects and how they’re placed in contemporary society.

He uses bricolage – roughly translated from French as “do it yourself” – to create his sculptures. His work incorporates everyday objects and popular icons such as Hello Kitty or Nike shoes to construct objects that have been touted for their masterful engineering, such as his recreation of the Apollo 11 lunar excursion model.

His work is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum in Los Angeles and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris.

This free public lecture will be followed by a question period moderated by Robert Enright, an art criticism professor in the School of Fine Art and Music and one of Canada’s foremost cultural journalists.

The annual lecture was established in 2007 by Dasha Shenkman, a Canadian art collector and philanthropist who lives in the United Kingdom.

U of G’s master of fine art students will display and discuss their current work in an open studio in Blackwood Hall.
