An online course offered by the University of Guelph is the first in Canada to achieve a Quality Matters (QM) Certification Mark.

The online degree-credit course – “Tourism Planning in the Less Developed World” — is offered by U of G’s Open Learning and Educational Support along with the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development.

“This is a significant accomplishment,” says Michelle Fach, director of Open Learning and Educational Support.

Quality Matters is an international program that certifies online and blended courses through peer review.

The program emphasizes learning from an instructional design perspective, Fach said.

“Achieving a Quality Matters Certification Mark validates the approaches that we take in all aspects of course design.”

The first Canadian institution to join Quality Matters in 2009, U of G is now the first Canadian university offering a course carrying the QM Certification Mark.

Taught by sessional instructor Marianne Staempfli, the course looks at tourism as a social construct. More information
