The University of Guelph’s football team played in the 107th Yates Cup in Hamilton on Saturday, losing to McMaster University 20 to 15.  More than 2,000 Gryphon fans attended the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football championship game.

It was U of G’s second trip to the Yates Cup in three seasons; the Gryphons last won the OUA championship in 1996.

It was McMaster’s third Yates Cup win in four years.

The Gryphons hadn’t lost this season since falling in overtime 34-27 to McMaster in the first game of the regular season.

After the Yates Cup game, head coach Stu Lang said: “Our defence deserves a lot of accolades.  They held McMaster without a touchdown today and that should be enough to win, but we were unable to take advantage of our opportunities.”
