The University of Guelph is Canada’s top university employer and one of the best employers overall in Canada, according to Forbes magazine.

The University placed sixth in the magazine’s first-ever ranking, called Canada’s Best Employers 2016.

U of G was the top-ranked university on the list, which was released Wednesday. Other post-secondary institutions include Laval University, Sheridan College and Queen’s University.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized nationally in this way,” said president Franco Vaccarino.

“Most important, this ranking is a tribute to the dedication and excellence of our staff and faculty. They are committed to ensuring U of G is an outstanding place to learn and to work, and it’s gratifying to have our collective efforts acknowledged.”

The ranking was based on an independent, anonymous survey conducted by Forbes of 8,000 Canadian employees of large companies and institutes.

For university employees, continued training and education opportunities were a key advantage, Forbes said.

In all, the list includes 250 employers across 25 industries, ranging from large corporations to community-based financial institutions to universities and government agencies.

Forbes features the top 25 employers in a special online gallery.
