Following the release of a five-year report containing data from the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability, Dr. Myrna Dawson, CFOJA founder, discussed some of its key findings.

In an interview with the Toronto Star, Dawson, a professor in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, said the report shows femicide rates continue to increase, providing context as to some of the contributing factors.

“We don’t listen to women when they say that they feel they’re in danger,” she added.

The report’s findings were also featured in CTVNews.ca, Yahoo! News Canada, NOW magazine and more.

Speaking with Global News, Dawson underscored that gender-based violence is a distinct form of violence that requires distinct solutions.

As well, Dawson contributed a commentary to Policy Options in which she discussed the pandemic’s disproportionate impacts on women and girls.

A professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Dawson researches violence and society, sex- and gender-based violence, homicide, violence prevention, public policy and criminal justice. Dawson is the director of the Centre for the Study of Social and Legal Responses to Violence and director of the CFOJA.
