Initial Phase of Construction of 78 College Ave. Residence Set to Begin

The University of Guelph’s Board of Governors has approved $10 million to support the initial phase of construction for the 78 College Ave. student residence project, marking the next step in expanding on-campus housing capacity and supporting student success.

Located at the southwest corner of McGilvray Street and College Avenue, adjacent to West Village Residence, the 78 College Ave. student residence project will deliver approximately 1,250 new on-campus beds primarily for first-year undergraduate students.

This project supports U of G’s plans to evolve as a top-tier university and responds to sustained demand for on-campus student residences.  Expanding on-campus housing will help support the transition of first-year students to university life and enhance their campus experience.

“This residence is a strategic investment in student success that will expand on-campus housing and support first-year students,” said Sharmilla Rasheed, vice-president, finance and operations. “We are pleased this latest funding allows us to move forward on this phase of construction on this project.”

This initial phase of construction is expected to begin on July 6, 2026. This phase will include the set up of a site trailer and equipment, topsoil removal, excavation, and underground service relocation.

As this phase begins, community members may notice temporary noise from heavy machinery, equipment movement, as well as dust and increased construction traffic in the area. The University and its contractors will proactively manage these impacts, including dust control, traffic control, equipment maintenance, and coordination to maintain safe and continual access for neighbouring properties, pedestrians, and campus operations. All planning logistics have been developed in coordination with the City of Guelph.

The University will continue to share updates as work progresses on the residence, which is on track to open in fall, 2029. Current information, including future construction notices and frequently asked questions, is available on the 78 College Ave. student residence project webpage.

Questions can be directed to the 78 College Ave. Project Team at 78collegeproject@pr.uoguelph.ca .
