An informative and experiential introduction to the use of Music Therapy in healthcare settings.

Music therapy is a discipline in which Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) use music purposefully within therapeutic relationships to support development, health, and well-being. Music therapists use music safely and ethically to address human needs within cognitive, communicative, emotional, musical, physical, social, and spiritual domains. On Wednesday, March 29, join us for an introduction to Music Therapy and its uses in various healthcare settings. Experience how music and sound can impact and improve emotional, mental, and physical well-being and explore future directions within the field.

Hosted by Mairead Harrigan (she/her), Mairead is a certified music therapist (MTA) specializing in mental health for adolescents and seniors. Mairead received an Honours Bachelor of Music Therapy in 2019 from Wilfrid Laurier University. While currently working in Long Term Care and retirement facilities in the Guelph region, Mairead has clinical experience in various mental health settings including Education and Community Partnership Programs, inpatient and outpatient addiction services, open custody facilities, and youth shelters. Mairead has facilitated music therapy with children, teens, older adults, and those in hospice/palliative care. Her approach is rooted in anti-oppressive, resource-oriented, and trauma-informed practices.
