Coyote Spotted on Campus

On the evening of May 26, a coyote was spotted near the west side of the University Centre near the food delivery area.

The coyote was not aggressive and there is no reason to believe it poses a major safety risk. Coyotes usually avoid people.

However, we would like to remind you of some safety tips from the City of Guelph on what to do if you see a coyote.

If you see a coyote:

  • Do not approach or touch a coyote. Keep your distance and a coyote will likely avoid you.
  • Do not turn your back or run from a coyote. Stay calm and back away.
  • Stand tall, wave your hands and make a lot of noise.
  • Carry a flashlight to scare off coyotes at night.
  • Do not let your pets chase a coyote.

Additionally, you should never feed a coyote or other wildlife, as feeding them makes them less fearful of humans and habituates them to foods provided by humans.

If a coyote becomes aggressive or poses an immediate danger to public safety, please call 911.
