As we prepare to embark on another exciting academic year, I want to extend a warm welcome to our students, faculty, and staff. Whether you are returning to campus or joining us for the first time, we are thrilled to have you as part of the University of Guelph community. As you likely know by now, Dr. Charlotte Yates is currently on leave, and I’m honoured to serve as acting president in her place.

This year, we are welcoming a larger incoming class. While we understand that this brings both excitement and challenges, I want to assure you that U of G is fully committed to fostering a rich and supportive environment where every member of our community can thrive.

For our students, especially those beginning their university journey, we know how pivotal the start of the school year can be. It’s a time of discovery, growth, and forging new friendships. We are dedicated to providing the resources and support you need to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. Whether you are living on or off-campus, we are working to ensure you feel connected and supported.  We encourage you to take advantage of the numerous services and supports available. The updated Healthy Campus website can be a good starting point to learn about the resources available to support your mental health, respiratory health and food security.

To our faculty and staff, I want to say thank you. You are at the heart of what makes U of G a strong and inclusive community. Your dedication and expertise play a critical role in shaping the experiences of our students. As a leadership team, we are committed to ensuring you are fully supported and empowered to succeed in the coming year.

Over the past school year, we have seen divisions and conflicts globally and on university campuses. As we enter a new school year, it is more important than ever that we cultivate an inclusive and compassionate community. Providing a learning and working environment free of harassment and discrimination is essential to our academic mission. As leaders we have a responsibility to our students, faculty, and staff to uphold policies that reflect our deep commitment to fostering a university community where everyone belongs.

Our community has always been a place where people with diverse lived experiences and perspectives come together to discuss and debate ideas from a position of mutual respect and intellectual curiosity. At a time when differences are creating divisions, I hope you will join me in committing to fostering an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued, diverse viewpoints are accepted and appreciated, and scholarly discourse and inquiry are promoted and advanced.

Together, we will make this academic year one of growth, connection, and success for all members of our community.

Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
