Roads on the University of Guelph campus will be closed to all but move-in traffic over the Labour Day weekend as the University welcomes students moving into residence.

Move-in weekend will take place Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31. To ensure optimal traffic flow, students are each given an arrival appointment between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on one of the scheduled days.

Increased traffic on Guelph roads

Heavier traffic is expected on Gordon Street between Stone Road and College Avenue. Pedestrians and cyclists travelling near U of G on Gordon Street are encouraged to use caution at busy intersections.

Traffic will also be heavy on Stone Road, University Avenue, Smith Lane and Victoria Road, particularly near U of G residence buildings.

Construction on College Avenue will continue throughout move-in weekend and could result in increased traffic in other areas.

The University is working closely with the City of Guelph to prepare for move-in weekend, carefully monitoring traffic on Aug. 30 and 31 to help mitigate traffic impact.

U of G road closures

Some University-owned roads will be closed to the public to provide room for incoming students on Aug. 30 and 31 include:

  • South Ring Road
  • East Ring Road
  • Dundas Lane
  • Macdonald Street

Some students will move in between 4 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29. East Ring Road and Dundas Lane will be closed during this time.

All fire and safety routes will remain open on campus throughout move-in weekend to allow for any emergency responses. Drivers in and around campus are expected to obey all traffic rules and regulations.

Bus stop changes

Buses will not travel to campus during move-in weekend to help reduce congestion.

City of Guelph transit buses and taxis will operate out of the Movati Athletic Centre parking lot (80 Stone Road W.) Further details on the routes affected by bus detours can be found on the Guelph Transit webpage.

GO Transit will offer temporary stop locations on Gordon Street.
