Rural development researcher Dr. Ryan Gibson spoke to The Brandon Sun about his latest study that examines how the pandemic has amplified issues commonly faced by newcomers, immigrants and migrant workers in rural Canadian communities.
Gibson said a key finding of the study is “there is no ‘cookie-cutter’ approach to immigration in rural communities” and communities need to adapt their strategies to better fit their locations and environments.
A professor in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, Gibson studies rural development strategies, regional planning policy, governance, immigration and mobility, wealth and philanthropy, and public policy.
