Food economist Dr. Mike von Massow explained to City News Radio, in an interview that aired on several radio stations, why food prices continue to rise.
He described the situation as “death by a thousand cuts” and said that recent CP Rail strikes in Western Canada, rising fuel prices and transportation costs are all factors behind the continued price increases. Von Massow also mentioned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused shortages of crops, notably wheat and fertilizer, as Ukraine is a major producer and exporter of those products.
A professor in the Department of Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics, within the Ontario Agricultural College, von Massow researches retail and restaurant food demand, supply chain management, and value chain structure and performance.
