In a Toronto Star article assessing the future of Canada’s food supply chain ravaged by COVID-19, worker shortages, and shipping logistics, Arrell Food Institute director Dr. Evan Fraser provided his thoughts on what should happen next.

In the article, Fraser said the assumptions that Canada’s food system will see trade expand and improve “aren’t nearly as rock solid as they were a decade ago,” and that the challenges to the food system won’t end with the pandemic.

More investment in Canada’s agriculture and food-packing sectors is necessary to prevent a larger labour crisis, Fraser also said.

Along with being a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment & Geomatics, Fraser is the Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security. He studies food security, food prices, rural agricultural policy and how each is affected by climate change.
