During the past few days, we have been hearing troubling news about the rise of COVID-19 cases in Ontario driven by the emergence of the Omicron variant, which is much more transmissible than previous variants. There is a lot of uncertainty about this variant, which leaves us all feeling worried, confused and deeply concerned for the health and well-being of our tri-campus communities and families. We are being updated regularly by Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin Guelph Public Health, and Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario, as well as by public health directives from Chatham-Kent and Toronto.

The University will continue to communicate with you on an ongoing basis as we receive new information and advice from public health.

I would like to stress the importance of getting your third COVID-19 shot as soon as you are eligible. We know that vaccination continues to be the best defence against COVID-19, including the Omicron variant. I encourage you to make an appointment for a third vaccination as soon as possible, either in your community or on campus at our own vaccination clinic in the student wellness centre. So far, our highly vaccinated campus community has kept us safe. Let’s keep it that way by everyone getting their third dose.

I know this continued uncertainty causes anxiety and stress. But we also know that the public health measures we have in place are still an important way to reduce the risk of infection. This includes physical distancing where possible, avoiding crowds, masking and hand washing.

You will be receiving updates later today about what we are doing in response to the evolving situation including:

  • Remote start for winter 2022 courses
  • Third doses
  • Exams
  • Campus services and operations
  • Residences
  • Study spaces
  • Research
  • Student Housing

We will continue to provide updates as circumstances change and as we receive up-to-date information.

Together, we have all worked hard this fall to fulfill the University’s mission and commitment to its students and community. Thank you for your dedication and support.

Sincerely,

Charlotte Yates
President and Vice-Chancellor
