Hospitality industry researcher Dr. Bruce McAdams, a professor in the Department of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management, spoke to CBC British Columbia about why Canadians are tipping more in this pandemic.
The article noted that the pandemic has legitimized the use of automatic tipping at payment terminals and all but ended the use of cash tips. McAdams said this has not only benefitted servers, but credit card companies as well, since their fees are based on a percentage of the total bill.
McAdams, who has researched the issue of tipping for more than a decade, founded the University of Guelph Sustainable Restaurant Project (UGSRP), which supports research in areas of restaurant sustainability.
