Dr. Ryan Norris, an ecologist and professor in the Department of Integrative Biology, co-wrote a commentary for the Toronto Star Opinion section on the use of the BTK (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki ) insecticide to combat the LDD moth (formerly known as the “European gypsy moth.”)
From backyards to parks, the caterpillars of the moths have been defoliating trees across southern Ontario, although defoliation typically does not kill a tree if it is healthy.
The commentary, written with Jessica Linton, a biologist at Natural Resource Solutions Inc., discusses some of the insecticide’s effects.
Norris’ ecology research is focused on the behaviour and conservation of migratory birds, insects and animals.
