Tersigni, who helped lead the University’s United Way record-breaking campaigns in 2015 and 2016 as staff co-chair, has been active with the organization for many years. She regularly encourages colleagues to donate their “time, talent or treasure” to support the annual campaign.

“I truly believe the United Way represents the power of coming together to tackle issues that are bigger than any one of us or any one organization to make real and effective change,” she says.

As a two-time alumnus of the University and long-time community volunteer, Tersigni says she is moved by the commitment of volunteers and donors across the region and especially the University’s students, staff, faculty, retirees and alumni.

“We know there are acute needs, and the pandemic has shone an even bigger spotlight on the areas where our most vulnerable neighbours need support,” says Tersigni.

“I am excited to continue giving back to a community that has given so much to me and am profoundly moved by the dedication of people in our region who are passionate about the same issues I’m passionate about: poverty, housing, mental health, seniors, safe kids and the well-being of our communities.”

The University of Guelph runs one of the most successful United Way campaigns in the country. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020 the University raised more than $530,000 to support the United Way. In 2018, the University raised more per person than any other post-secondary institution in Canada.

“The University’s commitment to the United Way is one of the foundational ways we, as an institution, improve life in our community,” says Dr. Charlotte Yates, University president and vice-chancellor. “I know that the United Way and, ultimately, the community will benefit from Patricia’s passion, strong organizational skills and love of people.”

In February, U of G received a Cornerstone Campaign Award as a major contributor to the 2021 campaign.
