In celebration of International Women’s Day, the University of Guelph will host an online art performance and discussion with musician, author and academic Vivek Shraya on Tuesday, March 9, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Entitled “Beyond the Binary,” the discussion and Q & A session will examine how we can challenge our thinking on the meaning of gender equality and create change for those impacted by patriarchal systems of power.

The event will challenge attendees to think beyond gender binary and white feminist approaches to gender equality.

Shraya is the author of I’m Afraid of Men, which Vanity Fair has called “cultural rocket fuel,” and her album with Queer Songbook Orchestra, “Part‑Time Woman”, was included in CBC’s list of Best Canadian Albums of 2017.

She is one half of the music duo Too Attached and the founder of the publishing imprint VS. Books. A Polaris Music Prize nominee and four-time Lambda Literary Award finalist, Vivek is currently an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Calgary and a director on the board of the Tegan and Sara Foundation.

The event will be hosted by U of G’s Student Wellness Services – Sexual Violence Support and Education, Student Experience, and Laurier’s Office of Dispute Resolution and Sexual Violence Support.
