Dr. Kate Puddister, a professor in the Department of Political Science who researches police accountability, spoke to the Toronto Star about new research she co-authored on the prosecution of Ontario police officers.
The new research, published in the Canadian Journal of Law and Society, found that of nearly 150 charges the Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has laid since 2005, most that were resolved ended in acquittal or a withdrawal of charges.
“These are really complex, challenging cases for the criminal justice system,” Puddister said.
Puddister researches many issues related to police and the courts, as well as criminal justice policy and the use of reference cases in Canadian courts of appeal.
