The UK’s Guardian newspaper highlighted U of G’s pioneering DNA barcoding technology as well as the work of Department of Integrative Biology professor Dr. Robert Hanner and his efforts to combat fish fraud.
The article examined a British Columbia fish company that is using U of G-developed DNA barcoding technology to ensure their fish species are authentic.
Hanner has conducted several research projects examining seafood mislabelling, and has found 25 to 40 percent of samples are mislabelled.
“This is not just a problem in Canada. It’s international,” he told the Guardian.
