On Sept. 22, U of G officially launched its 2020 United Way campaign. Within a matter of hours, more than $56,000 in pledges was received.

“It’s amazing to see such a strong response right out of the gate,” says Jill Ferguson, the campaign’s staff co-chair. “We are so grateful for the community’s engagement this year.”

While physical distancing has halted the usual chili cookoffs, bake sales and other team get-togethers that bring in donation dollars, the dozens of volunteers who make our campaign an annual success are committed to making this year one to remember.

“The United Way has provided great resources to help our volunteers plan remote events,” says Dan Gillis, faculty co-chair. “We’re excited to help keep our community connected while so many continue to work and learn remotely.”

A link to the United Way’s pledge card portal was sent by email last week to all faculty and staff. Those interested in donating can sign into the portal with their U of G credentials.

Ferguson and Gillis say the goal is to raise $620,000 this year, but they are more focused on increasing the number of people who participate in the campaign.

“We know that COVID-19 has created financial challenges for a lot of folks,” says Ferguson. “That’s why it’s so important for us to show our support as a University community.”

“Every family situation is unique. Our hope is that those who may be spending less this year without their usual to-go coffee or takeout lunches might put some of that extra savings toward the campaign,” adds Gillis.

As in previous years, U of G’s United Way campaign includes incentive prizes. Everyone who makes an online pledge is entered into a draw for the campaign’s grand prizes:

  • $500 RRSP from TD Canada Trust, Guelph
  • Registration/tuition fee for one course in Continuing Education at U of G from Open Learning and Educational Support
  • One-night stay (deluxe guestroom/junior suite), including breakfast for two guests and parking for one car from the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel, Toronto
