Prof. Kate Puddister, who researches police accountability with the Department of Political Science, spoke to the Toronto Star about the the probe that will soon begin into how Toronto police handled the case of Dafonte Miller, a Black man who lost his eye in a December, 2016, confrontation with two off-duty Toronto police offers.
Puddister said the review will examine how police oversight unfolded in this case, particularly the aspect of why the province’s Special Investigations Unit was not called.
“This investigation and its findings will be very important going forward,” she said.
Puddister researches many issues related to police and the courts, as well as criminal justice policy, examining the role of police oversight bodies and the use of reference cases in Canadian courts of appeal.
