Ann Pegoraro, the Lang Chair in Sport Management, spoke to the Toronto Star about why there’s a growing case for changing the sports team names that many find offensive.
She said while it’s often hard in sports to break with tradition, with diversity issues making headlines and dominating conversations both in sport and in wider society, teams are being forced to confront calls for change.
“I think we are seeing a change across sport right now,” Pegoraro said.
A sought-after expert in her field, Pegoraro has published extensively on and gender and diversity in sport and is a co-director of the newly formed National Research Hub for Gender Equity in Sport.
She will join Lang’s School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management in September.
