Eva Bell, a member of U of G’s Hospitality Services team, was a double medallist at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi in March.

Her efforts paid off with trips to the podium to collect a silver medal in the 200m run (34.81 seconds) and bronze in shot put (9.14 metres).

More than 100 Canadian athletes participated in nine disciplines at the Games. Says Bell, “It was an honour to represent Canada.”

After trying various sports, Bell focused on running, shot put and basketball.

After winning gold at the national championships, Bell was selected to compete at the World Games. “It’s not easy making it,” she says. “Determine your goal. You can always make your dreams come true.”

With support from Special Olympics coaches, she trained for two hours at a time at the campus Fieldhouse, fitting sessions in before her shifts at Mountain Hall cafeteria.

Special Olympics World Games 2019 Silver and Bronze medals

Bell’s co-workers helped raise funds for her to use during her World Games experience.

“We’re all really proud of her,” says Jackie Pearson, Bell’s manager.

Bell’s next goal is the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin. She and Guelph athlete Jennifer Allen will receive city medals from Mayor Cam Guthrie before a council meeting on April 23.
