U of G’s Graham Taylor appeared in several media stories on June 17 discussing how artificial intelligence is transforming the agricultural sector. Interviews appeared in the National Post, CTV News, Global News and the Toronto Star.
A professor in U of G’s School of Engineering and a faculty member at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Toronto, Taylor said agricultural systems that apply machine learning can detect patterns required for precision planting, autonomous vehicles and robotics.
He said that although many AI researchers focus on applications for wealthy tech firms and businesses, AI is attracting global interest because of growing urgency to find innovative ways to feed the world’s growing population.
Taylor said Canada is well-positioned to be a leader in artificial intelligence. He said the federal government has earmarked $950 million for technology “superclusters” designed to encourage academia and businesses to work together to boost fast-growing sectors.
Head of U of G’s Machine Learning Group, he studies machine learning and computer vision.
