Today is World No-Tobacco Day, and the World Health Organization is bringing global attention to the negative effects of smoking. Here at home, U of G is working to develop a smoke-free campus policy for the University’s Guelph campus, supporting our commitment to creating a healthy learning and working environment.

So far in its efforts to establish Guelph as a smoke-free campus, the University has:

  • Established a working group to consider what a smoke-free policy would look like
  • Created a website (uoguelph.ca/smokefree) with:
    • information on the process of becoming a smoke-free campus;
    • smoking cessation resources;
    • a research-based rationale for going smoke-free; and
    • frequently asked questions.
  • Started collecting feedback on a potential policy and process through community consultations and a form on the website.

Community consultation is an important part of developing a successful smoke-free policy. Look for opportunities to participate in either a focus group this summer or the broader consultation process in early fall.

We want to hear from you. Interested in contributing to the conversation?

  • Email smokefree@uoguelph.ca with your thoughts.
  • Request a consultation session using the same email address.
  • Complete the comment form on the Smoke-Free U of G website.

As a health-promoting University, U of G is committed to the well-being of its faculty, staff and students. The University acknowledges the efforts of Indigenous communities to become tobacco-wise and to keep tobacco sacred. We strive to support our community in making healthy decisions and in creating a healthy environment in which to study and work.
