U of G Prof. Michael von Massow appeared in a CTV News story on Jan. 31 talking about allegations that Canada Bread, George Weston and five grocers committed indictable offenses under the Competition Act.
A professor in U of G’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, von Massow told CTV News that allegations against the retailers are not that they conspired to fix bread prices but that they agreed to participate in fixed bread prices that bakeries were going to charge. He said a few cents on a loaf of bread might not sound like much, but if millions are sold, it becomes a more significant issue.
Von Massow’s research includes structure and performance of food value chains, economics of food demand and pricing strategy.
