The federal government unveiled the 2018 budget Tuesday, which included a significant investment for science research.

University of Guelph president Franco Vaccarino has released the following statement:

The University of Guelph applauds the federal government for recognizing the role science plays in building Canada’s future. The nearly $4 billion in funding announced today is a historic, long-term investment in fundamental and discovery research. This funding recognizes the strength and capacity of Canada’s universities to produce the innovations of tomorrow while educating the next generation.

It is also an investment in Canada’s future, as scientific research directly affects the health, safety, security and prosperity of our country. The University of Guelph is also pleased to see the budget provide support for gender equity and the status of women, and for other initiatives that support a highly skilled workforce and that meet Canada’s current and longer-term needs.

We look forward to supporting the innovation networks and superclusters, and to working with government and industry to help strengthen Canada’s position as a global research leader.

Universities Canada also released a statement about the 2018 budget and investment in science research.
