Prof. Jan Sargeant appeared in Jan. 12 stories in the National Post and on CTV News talking about the growing health craze of people drinking “raw,” untreated water from springs and other natural sources.

Sargeant, a professor in the Department of Population Medicine, said micro-organisms are always a concern when drinking untreated water. She said pathogens from fecal contamination from humans, livestock and wildlife can pose a serious health risk, and that municipalities treat their drinking water for a reason.

Sargeant researches food and water safety, zoonotic disease prevention, control and input of research to public health decision-making, and gastrointestinal illness.
