The treatment of Indigenous children in Canada’s child welfare system has hit headlines this week, with Indigenous services minister Jane Philpott holding emergency meetings, boosting funding and developing a plan to tackle systemic problems.
U of G political science professor David MacDonald says many Indigenous children were taken from their communities during the so-called Sixties Scoop and were placed in foster homes or put up for adoption. In the process, he says, many children were caught between conflicting views on child-rearing in Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
An expert on residential schools and Indigenous politics in Canada, MacDonald was involved in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
He is available for media interviews.
