Prof. Mike von Massow

Prof. Mike von Massow discusses online grocery services in the Globe and Mail, CTV, BNN and the Ottawa Business Journal. Metro Inc. is looking to expand its online grocery offerings to Ontario next year. The move followed an announcement last week by Loblaw Cos. Ltd. launching home delivery in Toronto and Vancouver.

The professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics says Canadian grocery chains have been slower than their U.S. and European counterparts to adopt online shopping because of low consumer demand. Things changed when Amazon acquired Whole Foods in August and meal-kit services emerged. These services send packages containing recipes and ingredients to consumers, who then cook the meals at home.

Von Massow studies structure and performance of food value chains, economics of food demand and pricing strategy.
