Prof. Evan Fraser, director of the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph, is featured in a new video released today by CBC for its “Canada Is…” series that is part of Canada 150.

Fraser discusses why “Farming is Canada” in the animated video, which was produced for CBC by The Thought Café. Other narrators of the “Canada Is…” series include Chris Hadfield and David Suzuki.

In his voice-over, Evan reminisces about how, as a child, he helped his grandfather farm in the Niagara region. In the future, he says farming must be more precise and sustainable. He discusses how U of G’s strengths in agri-food research can help Canada position itself as a world leader in agriculture.

Fraser holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security, and studies the social and environmental consequences of food price volatility. Co-author of the book Empires of Food: Feast, Famine and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations, Fraser was the first U of G professor to receive a prestigious Pierre Elliott Trudeau Fellowship.
