Studying feral cats in cities has netted an award for a University of Guelph researcher from the Urban Animal Foundation.

Tyler Flockhart, a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Integrative Biology, presented the top poster in the Researchers of 2015 category at the Summit for Urban Animal Strategies in Lake Louise, Alta., in October.

Flockhart studies free-roaming cat populations and how to manage them in urban areas.

An unknown number of feral cats live in Canadian towns and cities, where they can damage gardens, create disturbances at night and kill many songbirds each year. Cats carry toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease that can infect humans.

Flockhart tracks feral cats in Toronto and Guelph and is developing a cat population model along with Prof. Shane Bateman, Department of Clinical Studies.
