Dr. Margo Mountjoy, a sports medicine physician at the Health and Performance Centre (HPC), will take on a new role at the University of Guelph.

Starting Jan. 1, she will become Clinical and Academic Lead at HPC.

“We’re excited to have Margo work with us in this expanded capacity,” said Alison Burnett, director of Student Wellness Services, which includes HPC.

“Her expertise and experience in sport and in sport medicine will be a tremendous asset.”

Sports medicine doctors and practitioners in the HPC, located in the Powell Building, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate sport and activity-related injuries and illnesses as well as develop interventions to promote athletic performance and promote health.

Mountjoy will oversee the quality of care of clinical services offered at the Centre, including recruitment and continuing education for practitioners, as well as developing sport science research initiatives, educational opportunities for learners and preventive care programs.

As a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Games Group, she serves as a physician and adviser at the summer and winter as well as Youth Olympic Games.

She also heads special projects for the IOC, such as chairing the Female Athlete Health Project and the recent Youth Athlete Development initiative.

A former competitive synchronized swimmer and team physician for the Canadian Olympic synchronized swimming team, Mountjoy was the first Canadian and the first woman to chair the sport medicine committee of Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), the international federation that governs all aquatic sports. She currently is the team physician for Athletics Canada National Endurance Training Centre and for Triathlon Canada (eastern hub).
