The University of Guelph community is mourning the loss of John Eccles, who passed away Feb. 17 at the age of 99.

A 1940 graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), he served as a lieutenant in the Mid-Ocean Escort for the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Cornwall, HMCS Discovery and HMCS Fergus during the Second World War.

The John Eccles Centre at U of G was named after him in recognition of his notable career at the University, which included positions as director of public relations, director of accommodations and secretary of the OAC Alumni Association.

A celebration of life will be held at Cutten Fields, 190 College Ave. E. in Guelph on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
