Third-year chemistry student Ellen Song is the new editor for U of G’s undergraduate research journal.

Song is also the current president of the College of Physical and Engineering Science Student Council, a peer helper and a member of Curtain Call Productions. A native of Nova Scotia, she enrolled at Guelph in 2012 after receiving a Lincoln Alexander Chancellor’s Scholarship, one of the University’s most prestigious entrance awards.

SURG (Studies by Undergraduate Researchers at Guelph) was launched in 2007 to acknowledge the contributions undergraduates make to U of G research and provides a means to publish work that might not meet the requirements of mainstream academic journals.

The open-access publication is published by the Office of Research, in conjunction with McLaughlin Library. It publishes original research articles and reviews by students from all disciplines on campus. Submissions are primarily based on summer work and fourth-year thesis and research courses.

Song is one of several Guelph undergraduates involved in producing the research journal. Students work as editors, reviewers, authors and readers, and all submissions are reviewed by some of the University’s top researchers.

Oct. 31 is the deadline for submissions to the fall 2014 SURG issue. For more information, send a pre-submission inquiry to surg@uoguelph.ca  or visit the journal website: https://journal.lib.uoguelph.ca/index.php/surg/index
