Five Gryphon teams are ranked in this week’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) top 10 polls: football, men’s soccer, women’s rugby and men’s and women’s cross country.
The defending CIS champion men’s and women’s Guelph cross country teams are ranked No. 1 in the first week of rankings for the sport. The Gryphons opened their season this past weekend at the annual Vic Matthews New Balance Open in Guelph. On both sides, the Gryphons finished first in the team competition.
The Gryphon football team moved to 3-1 on the season on Sept. 20 following a 66-0 routing of the Queen’s Gaels in the U of G Homecoming game. The Gryphons remain as the No. 6 ranked team following week four and are heading into their bye week before going to Windsor on Oct. 4.
The men’s soccer team lost a tough 3-1 final to the No. 2 York Lions this past week and fell from No. 9 to No. 10. The Gryphons will play three games this week and look to move up the standings.
The women’s rugby team fell from No. 2 to No. 5 this week following a tie on Sept. 20 against the Waterloo Warriors. The week ahead holds a top-ten battle as the No. 5 Gryphons travel to Hamilton Sept. 27 to take on the No. 4 Marauders.
