Turn on the oven, light the barbecue or build a campfire. How you cook isn’t as important as what you cook on Food Day Canada (Aug. 2), a celebration of Canadian cuisine. Share your menu by posting it on Food Day Canada’s Facebook event page.

University of Guelph food laureate Anita Stewart launched the “world’s longest barbecue” in 2003 in response to the mad-cow-disease crisis that took a financial toll on Canadian farmers and the beef industry.

Since then, Food Day Canada has evolved into an annual national event to raise awareness and whet appetites for Canadian dairy, grain, meat and produce from coast to coast. The event also celebrates the people who grow, raise and prepare our food before it reaches our table.

Stewart’s own itinerary for the day includes a visit to Langdon Hall in Cambridge, Ont. and Jackson-Triggs Winery in Niagara, Ont.

An author and radio personality, she was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2012.
