A project started by a University of Guelph professor to help Honduran farmers will benefit from a Toronto marathon this fall.

Proceeds from the Run for Biodiversity — part of the annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Oct. 14 — will go to the Foundation for Participatory Research with Honduran Farmers. This non-governmental organization (NGO) promotes community-based agricultural research teams to diversify seed supply and develop suitable plant varieties.

The Honduran participatory farmer research project was started by U of G sociology and anthropology professor Sally Humphries almost 20 years ago. It’s funded through a partnership with USC-Canada, a Canadian NGO dedicated to supporting small farmers.

The project helps prepare teens for farm careers through work in agricultural research teams and through help with schooling.

Humphries plans to take part in the marathon, and other runners and walkers are invited to participate.
