The family of professor emeritus Bruce Hunter, Department of Pathobiology, write to thank the University community for expressions of sympathy after his sudden death Oct. 19:
“Extending a heartfelt thanks to the administration, faculty and friends, who have joined with us to grieve and celebrate Bruce’s life. His life force has rippled out globally, and he was a blessing to many. He will be greatly missed.” From Daina Hunter and family.
Prof. Hunter is survived by his wife and children, Lija (Mike) Tovell, Freya (friend Josh) and Nikki (Jarrett) Carty, as well as three grandchildren and a large extended family in Ontario and on the Prairies.
Prof. Hunter retired from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 2010 after a distinguished 30-year career. He was a popular teacher and a widely recognized expert on naturally occurring diseases of wild birds, poultry and mink. He was a longtime champion of integrating animal, human and environmental health at OVC and around the world and played a key role in setting up a Canadian community of practice in ecohealth and a graduate-level course in ecosystem approaches to health.
Recently, he was co-leader of a poultry project in Ghana for Veterinarians Without Borders / Vétérinaires Sans Frontières-Canada. This year, he received a volunteer award from the organization in recognition of his work and commitment.
