SUMMARY:Tynecastle Park\, Edinburgh - The future of football architecture?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating talk on historical and recent events in Scottish football architecture. \nFocusing on Edinburgh’s Tynecastle Park\, the key issue is the survival of historical inner-city sports arenas and the quest to make football architecture more sustainable. The talk also highlights the importance of Archibald Leitch\, the Scotsman who defined modern football architecture more than any other individual in the UK. The talk will briefly address some cultural connections between Scotland and the Norwegian south-west coast\, where the guest speaker grew up. \nEven Smith Wergeland is an associate professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in Norway. His main fields of teaching are architectural history and architectural preservation. He directs the school’s executive master’s programme in architectural heritage and is currently the head of the Oslo Centre for Critical Architectural Studies. His research covers a number of topics\, including urban mobility\, garden cities\, sports architecture\, cultural heritage and contemporary venues for cultural production. \nThis event will be hosted live on Zoom and the link will be posted on the Eventbrite page and emailed to all registered attendants 24 hours before the event begins. \nThe event is sponsored by the Centre for Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph. \nEvent image: Hearts vs Tottenham at Tynecastle Park\, August 11\, 2011.

SUMMARY:Movement Monday - Chair Yoga: Get Fit Where you Sit
DESCRIPTION:Chair Yoga is the way to go when you are reluctant to get into the yoga clothes and get on the mat – challenge yourself with Chair Yoga. \nChair Yoga is a gentle yoga practice that adapts various traditional postures for practice in the chair or with the support of a chair. It is a gentle form of yoga that involves breath-work\, meditation\, and gentle stretches; all of which release stress and tension from both body and mind. This form of yoga helps those who are aging or have disabilities but is also used in office settings to relieve stress right in our own office chairs\, even during the workday. The practice increases flexibility\, strength\, and body awareness. It soothes the nervous system and helps to calm the busy mind. It also decreases the potential for injury due to repetitive strain in the workplace! \nAbout the facilitator:\nMonique Vischschraper is an advanced\, certified yoga instructor with over a thousand hours of yoga teaching experience. Her own practice dates back to her youth; her mother to this day jokes that she was doing yoga in-utero in tandem with her mother. Monique leads yoga at the Guelph Community Health Centre\, Movati\, and at the University of Guelph as part of the U of G Yoga and Meditation Collective. She is continually studying and upgrading her knowledge and skills. She enjoys learning about the anatomy\, physiology and science of yoga as well as studying the ancient yogic texts.
