SUMMARY:Providing Feedback to Graduate Student Writers: Rethinking Traditional Approaches
DESCRIPTION:This workshop for faculty shares approaches to providing feedback on academic writing projects such as theses and dissertations. \nWe discuss ways to anticipate and prepare for the challenges that graduate writers\, including writers for whom English is an additional language (EAL)\, may experience as they receive\, interpret\, and respond to feedback. We show how you can support your graduate students throughout the writing process and provide meaningful feedback under time constraints by approaching feedback as both a teacher and a researcher. In particular\, we focus on discourse analysis as a feedback tool which moves away from deficit thinking about EAL users. In this workshop\, we will provide opportunities for participants to share ideas\, strategies\, and challenges with each other and to practice delivering written feedback. \nThis event is online. A Zoom link will be provided via email approximately one day before the workshop.

SUMMARY:Listening to Different English Accents (online)
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to understanding different pronunciations\, much of the focus is on changing the speaker while ignoring listening practices. The purpose of this workshop is to have participants consider how they can be better listeners of different types of accented speech. Along with practicing practical strategies to improve understanding of various English accents\, participants will critically think about the nature of listening itself (and how it is not as objective as we think it is). \nThis event is online. A Zoom link will be provided via email approximately one day before the workshop. \nThis workshop is open to all students\, faculty and staff.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Anong Beam and Rhéanne Chartrand
DESCRIPTION:In response to the Art Gallery of Guelph’s Fall 2023 exhibition Carl Beam: Pieces of a Puzzle\, AGG welcomes artist Anong Beam\, Carl Beam’s daughter\, in conversation with curator Rhéanne Chartrand\, who has long been engaged with Beam’s oeuvre. Considering the stories and legacies of the Manitoulin Island-based M’Chigeeng artist\, their dialogue will centre on The Columbus Suite\, a compelling series of prints featured in the exhibition created by Beam in response to the discourses surrounding the quincentenary of European arrival on Turtle Island. \nProbing the nuances with which the artist investigated and challenged narratives of world history\, politics\, science\, ecology\, materiality\, and Indigeneity\, the speakers will delve into Beam’s profound influence and its resonance on both personal and community levels. The contributions of the prolific artist continue to leave an indelible mark in the realms of both contemporary visual arts and Indigenous cultural resilience and representation. \nCarl Beam: Pieces of a Puzzle was curated by Sally Frater and presented by the Art Gallery of Guelph with the support of the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. \nImage detail: Carl Beam\, Lincoln and Ravens\, 1990\, photo-etching. SUMMARY:Hibernate: A virtual\, creative workshop on caring for our mental health in winter
DESCRIPTION:Winter is a hard season for many of us. The days are shorter\, the quality of light is not as brilliant as the spring & summer months\, the cold temperatures limit our activities and often lead us to retreat inside. For these reasons and more\, our mental health can really suffer during the winter months. \nJoin us for this creative workshop as we focus on how winter can be a season of healing dormancy and restoration. We will use art to reflect upon the ways that we want to care for ourselves in this season. \nIf you attended this workshop when Jazmine hosted it last January 2023\, you are more than welcome to attend again. Though the theme remains the same\, the art directive will be unique.
